ZAGREB, Nov 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament continued its session on Friday with a debate on a request by the Party of Rights (HSP) that a commission be set up to investigate the handling of transcripts from the Office of the first Croatian president Franjo Tudjman.

Presenting the request, HSP leader Anto Djapic said that the Croatian public had witnessed for years classified documents leaking from the Office of the President, and that every country had an obligation to protect its national interests, "particularly with regard to defence and national security", by protecting classified documents.

Djapic warned that over the past few years there had been frequent cases of the media publishing such documents even before they were declassified, citing the recent publication of the so-called Brijuni transcripts, which speak of the Croatian military operation "Storm" which crushed the Serb rebellion in central Croatia in August 1995.

"In this country the media protect their archives, while the government does not," Djapic said, adding that it was high time that the truth were revealed about who was responsible for leaking transcripts to the public.

The commission's task would be, among other things, to find out why the documentation from the Office of the President was not stored in the National Archives as decided by the government in January 2001, whether the transcripts were made available to the Hague war crimes tribunal in a legal way and whether any of them had been falsified by comparing them to original audio recordings.

The request will be discussed by the parliamentary clubs of deputies.
