ZAGREB, Nov 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Chief Public Prosecutor has ordered a preliminary investigation following media reports that the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer is investigating the business operations of its Zagreb branch due to suspicions that it has paid certain Croatian doctors large sums of money in order to boost the sale of Pfizer products.

"We have compiled a file based on media reports on the case and we are verifying those allegations. We will also ask Pfizer to send us the results of their internal investigation, and after that, if necessary, we will notify the police," Chief Public Prosecutor Mladen Bajic told Hina on Friday.

The director of Pfizer's Zagreb branch, Zdenko Bucan, and the director of the Office for Corporate Communications, Sasa Separovic, have been fired for suspicion of corruption, and the company will temporarily be represented by its business director for the Balkans, Christine Schellhorn.

Bucan, who in the meantime became a candidate for the post of economic adviser at the Croatian Consulate-General in New York, has told Croatian media that he is surprised by his dismissal because he has personally warned of irregularities in the company's operations.

Health Minister Andrija Hebrang has sent inspection teams to three hospitals where Pfizer's osteoporosis drug is being tested due to suspected irregularities in connection with payments for the tests.
