ZAGREB, Nov 5 (Hina) - The president of the Hague war crimes tribunal, Theodor Meron, ended his two-day visit to Croatia on Friday by meeting President Stjepan Mesic for talks on the progress of cooperation between Croatia and the U.N. court and on the solving of the case of fugitive general Ante Gotovina.

Speaking to the press after the talks, Meron said solving the Gotovina issue was of the utmost importance for the Hague tribunal. He added he would like to see Gotovina in The Hague, where he would be tried under the highest standards of international law.

Meron said solving the Gotovina case was in the interest of the international judiciary and the Croatian people, as well as his personal wish. He added Gotovina's extradition would end Croatia's history chapter and open the chapter of its future.

Also today, Meron visited Zagreb's County Court, one of four in Croatia expected to take over war crime cases from the Hague tribunal.

Court president Bozidar Rumenjak told Hina Meron seemed very satisfied with the court's equipment and judges' experience, which Rumenjak added guaranteed that cases transferred from the Hague tribunal would be processed within reasonable deadlines, in a fair and unbiased manner.
