ZAGREB, Nov 4 (Hina) - The president of the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague, Theodor Meron, on Thursday held talks with Croatian Supreme Court president Ivica Crnic about the transfer of some cases to Croatian courts.

Meron is visiting Croatia for the first time.

Speaking to the press after the talks, Crnic said "the main topic was the takeover of Hague tribunal war crimes cases. We informed president Meron about Croatia's legislation and Supreme Court practice, and about the special organisation of Croatian courts for such trials". He added special investigating departments and panels comprised of experienced judges had been set up in order to guarantee fair trials.

"We assessed that legal and material conditions exist to ensure witness protection so witnesses could really talk about facts. We also agreed that all conditions exist here to apply the provisions on command responsibility as before international courts," said Crnic.

Attending the meeting were also Supreme Court criminal judges.

Meron said the meeting was very useful because he became acquainted with the substantive law and court practice in Croatia related to international law.

He commended the progress achieved in training Croatian judges for war crime trials at seminars organised by the Hague tribunal and the Croatian Justice Ministry.

Meron said the Hague tribunal's cooperation with Croatian courts, judiciary and the Justice Ministry was very important for the creation of rules and standards which were expected to be followed in all war crime trials here.

Meron said the Hague tribunal was ready to continue offering help and guidelines to Croatian courts in dealing with problems in future war crime trials.

He went on to say that a special trial chamber which he recently set up was deciding about referring five cases to national courts, and that the first on the agenda was the transfer of the trial of generals Rahim Ademi and Mirko Norac to Croatia. He added he could not comment on them because the trial chamber was considering them.

A lecture Meron was to give at the Supreme Court after today's meeting was cancelled at his request, sources at the court said.

Earlier today Meron met Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul, while tomorrow he is due to meet Justice Minister Vesna Skare-Ozbolt, Zagreb County Court president Bozidar Rumenjak, and President Stjepan Mesic.
