ZAGREB, Oct 30 (Hina) - The Croatian Embassy to Washington has
requested from the US State Department "absolutely every detail" about detained
Croatian truck driver Damir Mikulic, including how he can be contacted, but
has yet not received the requested information, a member of the Croatian
Foreign Ministry task force monitoring developments in Iraq, Zoran Bradic, told
Hina by telephone on Saturday. The Foreign Ministry and the US Embassy in Zagreb confirmed on Friday
that Mikulic was "alive and well" in the US-run Bucca camp near Umm Qasr in
southern Iraq, where US forces keep foreign nationals.
The Croatian truck driver was detained by US forces about a month ago
for "allegedly collecting vehicle information and personal identification
information beyond what is considered of general interest to tourists," the US
Embassy said.
Bradic said that according to the information available to the Croatian
government, the US forces were not treating Mikulic as a military person, but
as "a civilian who found himself in an area of operations of US military
authorities".
Bradic expressed hope that Croatia would be given the requested
information soon, "possibly early next week".
