ZAGREB, Oct 29 (Hina) - The results of Croatia's cooperation with the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe are very good and Croatia's contribution to regional cooperation is extraordinary, Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact Erhard Busek said in Washington on Thursday.

Busek told Hina he was satisfied with the result of cooperation with the incumbent and former Croatian government.

He highlighted good results in cooperation in the return of refugees, the restitution of their property and the strengthening of Croatia's economy.

Croatia's contribution to regional cooperation is extraordinary, Buseks said and added the Croatian government said it saw itself as as connection between the European Union and other countries in the region.

Busek gave a talks in the Georgetown University in Washington on Thursday about the achievement of the Stability Pact over the past five years and its plans for the future. The Stability Pact for Southeast Europe was established in Sarajevo in 1999.

Saying that early next year Croatia would launch EU membership talks, Buseks stressed it was very important for the country to meet conditions for joining the European Union.

He was not able exactly state the amount of the financial assistance which came through the Stability Pact for the implementation of programmes and projects in Croatia, but stressed that the funds went to the programmes on the return of refugees and infrastructure projects.

Busek said that over the past five years the Stability Pact had directly and indirectly assisted various projects in the region with EUR25 billion of which EUR6.5 billion were earmarked for infrastructure projects such as highways.

He said that the main objective of the Stability Pact was having its members join the EU and NATO which, according to him, was the main encouragement to the countries of the region to implement reforms and advance cooperation.

The coordinator said he expected the Pact to close down after all its member countries become candidates for EU membership. He said that according to the EU budgetary plans, the Pact should close down between 2007 and 2013.
