ZAGREB, Oct 28 (Hina) - Spokesman for the Croatian government Ratko Macek said on Thursday the government had not yet made a decision to call presidential elections, but stressed the decision would be made soon.

Macek confirmed that 2 January 2005 was the optimum day for the first round of the presidential elections.

After consultations between Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, President Stjepan Mesic and Supreme Court President Ivica Crnic it was said that 2 January was the optimum date for the presidential elections, Macek told Hina.

President Mesic said today the government had decided that the presidential elections be held on 2 January 2005. He said he learnt about the government's decision yesterday at a meeting with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and added he absolutely agreed with it.

"The government has decided that the elections be held on 2 January and my talks with the Prime Minister focused on that," Mesic told reporters after his meeting with Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov in Zagreb.
