MILAN CARDINAL CELEBRATES MASS MARKING 1700TH ANNIVERSARY OF SIRMIUM MARTYRS

ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - The central celebration of the 1700thanniversary of saints-martyrs from Srijem, known as the SirmiumMartyrs, was held in the town of Srijemska Mitrovica on Tuesday,pooling over 200 Catholic dignitaries and priests, dignitaries of theEastern Rite Church (known as the Uniate Church) and of the SerbOrthodox Church as well as about 10,000 pilgrims, including a largenumber of believers who belong to the Eastern Rite Church.
ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - The central celebration of the 1700th anniversary of saints-martyrs from Srijem, known as the Sirmium Martyrs, was held in the town of Srijemska Mitrovica on Tuesday, pooling over 200 Catholic dignitaries and priests, dignitaries of the Eastern Rite Church (known as the Uniate Church) and of the Serb Orthodox Church as well as about 10,000 pilgrims, including a large number of believers who belong to the Eastern Rite Church.

Mass in this northern Serbian town was said by the archbishop of Milan, Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi.

In attendance were Croatian and Bosnian cardinals, Zagreb Archbishop Josip Bozanic and Sarajevo Archbishop Vinko Puljic respectively, the Apostolic Nuncio to Zagreb, Javier Lozano, almost all archbishops and bishops from Croatia and Bosnia, as well as from Slovenia, Belgrade Archbishop Stanislav, a local dignitary of the Eastern Rite Church, Djura Djudjar, and envoys of Serb Orthodox Church Patriarch Pavle, bishops Irinej and Vasilj.

On behalf of the host, Djakovo-Sirmium Bishop Marin Srakic addressed the gathered and read out a letter sent by Pope John Paul II for this occasion.
