ZAGREB, Oct 21 (Hina) - Lawyers representing General Ante Gotovina, who is wanted by the Hague war crimes tribunal, on Thursday picked up photocopies of transcripts of two meetings former President Franjo Tudjman held with top military brass at Brijuni Isles on the eve of the summer 1995 Operation Storm.

The photocopies refer to meetings held on 17 and 31 July 1995. The first consists of 52 and the second of 62 pages.

"The contents of the transcripts' photocopies are identical to what the print media published recently, and now we are completely sure that they are forgeries," said Ivo Farcic, one of the three lawyers who collected the papers at the Department for Cooperation with International Criminal Courts.

Farcic told Hina the photocopies contain "factual and formal flaws". He maintains the transcripts were doctored because they do not contain the names of some persons who attended the Brijuni meetings. He recalled that some of the participants in the meetings told the media the transcripts were forgeries.

Gotovina's lawyers requested being granted access to the original transcripts and allowed to listen to tapes of the meetings given that both documents state the meetings were recorded.

Farcic said they were told at the Department for Cooperation with International Criminal Courts that they knew nothing about the original transcripts or the tapes. He added Gotovina's lawyers would contact the Justice Ministry and request the original transcripts and the tapes also in writing.

Suspicion that the transcripts were forgeries prompted Gotovina's lawyers to press charges against unknown persons two days ago.

Gotovina's defence team had been asking for the photocopies of the Brijuni meetings since June. They received them after the Government yesterday decided to declassify them.
