After the meeting, Jezerinac told reporters he had informed Mesic about the work of the Military Ordinariate, which was established by the Holy See in 1997.
Asked about the situation in the Croatian Army, Mesic said that 11,000 soldiers, commissioned and non-commissioned officers left the army during the reorganisation process with considerable severance pay.
"Those were considerable funds which Croatia provided so that reorganisation could be performed according to NATO standards," he said, adding that more funds would now be provided for military purposes.
"Now that the reorganisation process is over, we can more easily renew the army in line with different standards," he said, adding that with funds at Croatia's disposal "we are absolutely safe and can respond to any challenge".
