This is the only Serb Orthodox church in Mostar that was reconstructed after the war.
Herzegovina Orthodox bishop Grigorije, who consecrated the church, said that Serb returnees in Mostar wanted coexistence.
"The church was destroyed by those who did not fear God. The message of all Orthodox believers is peace, love and coexistence, the war is behind us and we should leave it there," he said.
The ceremony was also attended by representatives of the Catholic Church and the Islamic community. The Serb member of the Bosnian Presidency, Borislav Paravac, said he believed that Mostar Serbs were participating in the city authorities on an equal basis and hoped that the reconstruction of the church would facilitate coexistence.
The Church of the Most Holy Virgin was built in 1832, most probably on the foundations of a 15th century church. Under the order of the Ottoman rulers, it was built half-way down into the ground.
