VUKOVAR, Oct 16 (Hina) - The 13th anniversary of a Doctors Without Borders humanitarian convoy which rescued 105 wounded from Vukovar's wartime hospital on 19 October 1991 was marked in the eastern Croatian town on Saturday.

The ceremony, at which the wounded and staff of Vukovar's wartime hospital had the chance to meet again, was organised by the Association of Croatian Volunteer Doctors in 1990-1991 and Vukovar's General Hospital.

Dr Vesna Bosanac, former head of the wartime hospital and incumbent head of the General Hospital, presented letters of thanks to those who were responsible for saving the lives of the 105 wounded.

Recalling the humanitarian convoy, Bosanac said its success was important for Vukovar and its wartime hospital since Doctors Without Borders was the only international body which answered the appeals for help that were sent at the height of the Serb aggression on the town.

She recalled the plan was for the convoy to come to Vukovar twice a week, take away the most gravely wounded patients, and bring medical supplies.

Bosanac added that the former Yugoslav People's Army, however, did not allow it. The first convoy was stopped on October 8, 1991 and did not even reach the hospital, while the second, on October 19, managed to take away 105 wounded from the hospital. But after that, the military did not let the convoy pass through.

Those attending today's ceremony laid a wreath at Vukovar's Homeland War Victims Memorial Cemetery.
