Commenting on a statement by ICTY chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte that it was Croatia's obligation to locate the country the fugitive general was hiding in, Mesic said: "It would be great if Croatia could do that".
He added that Croatian intelligence services had not yet established it.
Commenting on del Ponte's statement that she would support provisional release pending trial for generals Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac, Mesic said this was expected because del Ponte had told senior Croatian officials in Zagreb she would not oppose the two generals' provisional release.
"They voluntarily surrendered and have cooperated with the tribunal the entire time, they gave statements to ICTY investigators and were always available to the tribunal. Therefore there was no reason for them to remain in the ICTY detention," Mesic said.
He took part in the work of a meeting of the army chiefs of staff of countries signatories to the U.S.-Adriatic Charter.
