ZAGREB, Sept 24 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said that runaway general Ante Gotovina "is not in Croatia according to information possessed by intelligence agencies and the police".

Mesic, who on Friday toured Zdenci on the occasion of the day of the town, located some 100 kilometres east of Zagreb, said the police checks of people believed to be in contact with General Gotovina were conducted in line with the law and their purpose was to establish relevant facts.

Asked by reporters to comment on "the sudden" decision of the Defence Ministry to send Gotovina's wife Dunja Zloic Gotovina into retirement, Mesic said that "no comment in necessary when a person has not appeared at work for seven years".

Asked whether he would make some steps after the latest incident on the Croatian-Slovene border in his capacity as the head of state, Mesic said that there was no need for him to do anything.

"Minor parties use such sort of incidents to attract attention ahead of elections in Slovenia, under the pretext of care for national interests," the president said. He added that the Croatian police had done their job well and that there was nothing more to be said.

Asked about the possibility of Croatian troops being deployed in Iraq, Mesic reiterated that Croatia would take part only in UN-led operations and in accordance with its potentials.

"When we defended our country, friendly states and Croatian emigrants helped us, but we in Croatia bore the largest burden," Mesic said, adding that the Iraqi people needed the allied forces to help topple the Saddam Hussein regime, but it was questionable whether the latest developments in the country were on the right track.
