The United States is willing to support some war crimes trials in Belgrade on condition that Mladic and Radovan Karadzic are extradited to the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the US Ambassador to Belgrade said after officially handing over an agreement on a USD80,000 donation to the Special Prosecutor's Office and the Special War Crimes Court in Belgrade.
The position of my government is that it can okay war crimes trials before domestic trials under certain conditions. We have said on several occasions that we would support trials before domestic courts upon the extradition of Mladic and Karadzic to The Hague, if they are on territory of Serbia-Montenegro, the diplomat said,
Polt also expressed satisfaction with some ongoing trials before Serbian courts, including the trial for the Ovcara massacre.
He added that US Under Secretary for Political Affairs Marc Grossman and the ambassador for war crimes issues, Pierre Richard Prosper, would arrive in Belgrade tomorrow for talks with Serbian-Montenegrin and Serbian top officials.
