Ambassador Beck, who replaced Dennis Snider in this post, said that she was starting her new office at a favourable moment because relations between Canada and Croatia had never been better.
Trade is increasing, tourism is growing with geometrical progression and academic and cultural relations are also improving, Beck said.
Beck said that Croatia was on the doorstep of membership in the European Union and welcomed steps that were being taken in reforming the economy and government administration.
She said that 15,000 Canadians of Croatian descent were one of the bonds connecting the two countries.
Mesic confirmed that Croatia was directing its efforts at European integration processes, but added that Croatia did not want to confine itself geographically, but that by accepting the standards of a united and open Europe it also wanted to establish ties with countries on other continents.
Mesic underlined the importance of cooperation through various international mechanisms in which he said the United Nations must play a key role.
Ambassador Wu praised Croatia for choosing its own path of development, and said that through its active involvement in regional and international affairs Croatia was contributing to the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.
Wu said that China and Croatia understood and supported each other in international affairs, adding that Croatia supported the unification of China.
He conveyed a personal message from Chinese President Hu Jintao, in which he emphasised the role of the Croatian president as a friend of the Chinese people and the importance of his visit to China in 2002, when foundations for broad cooperation were laid.
"The new Chinese leadership attaches great importance to the friendship with Croatia and wants to cooperate with it at all levels and in all areas," the Chinese president said in his message, thanking Mesic for inviting him to visit Croatia and saying that he was confident that he would have an opportunity to meet him.
Mesic said that Zagreb and Beijing had been developing their friendship for more than a decade, and reiterated his invitation to the Chinese president to visit Croatia.
