Municipal officials notified local restaurant owner Branko Erceg, who set up the plaque both times. This morning Erceg removed the plaque without protest, so there was no need for the police to intervene, local police officials said.
The stone plaque bearing the said message was spotted first on Sunday morning, and after it was removed, another plaque with the same sentence appeared in the afternoon. A warning sign reading "Caution! Land Mines!" was set up near the plaque.
A special police unit inspected the plaque and the area around it and established that there was no danger of mines, Split County police department chief Nino Curic said.
Due to some opposition from around 50 local residents who gathered at the location, the police yesterday decided to leave the plaque standing so as to avoid conflicts with the locals, but continued to patrol the area, Curic said.
