The holiday was also marked in Sinj, one of Croatia's three largest Marian shrines 20 km north of the southern coastal city of Split, where mass was attended by dozens of thousands of people, including faithful from neighbouring Bosnia-Herzegovina as well as foreign tourists vacationing in Croatia, who also took part in a procession.
Services were also said in Marian shrines in Ilaca, Aljmas, and Dragotin in eastern Croatia.
About 20,000 faithful attended mass in the Marian shrine in Krasno, 40 km northwest of Gospic in central Croatia.
Parliament President Vladimir Seks attended mass near Blato on the southern Adriatic island of Korcula. Apart from the Feast of the Assumption, the town of Korcula today also marked the victory its residents won on 15 August 1571, when they defended their town from the Turks. Numerous tourists, notably Italians, watched today's procession.
