In attendance was President Stjepan Mesic, who reiterated that
Croatia's most important task was to create conditions facilitating a
fast admission to the European Union and NATO. "We, however, don't
want to be only formal members but also fight for the full achievement
of European standards."
"The associated Europe which is opening its borders no longer has
motives for wars. Entering this Europe is our wish as well as our
fate," Mesic said.
Speaking of the economy, the president underlined that the development
of the country called for the development of industry.
Croatia cannot focus only on the development of agriculture and
tourism and must also develop its industry, he said, adding that the
government should upgrade legislation in order to encourage exporters,
open free zones and give foreign investors the chance of generating
profit.
