Speaking to reporters on Saturday on behalf of the signatories,
Miroslav Tudjman, Zdravko Tomac and Davor Domazet urged parliament to
set up a commission which, based on evidence and facts, would
establish the truth about the war of independence and the fact that it
served to defend and liberate the country, with a view to reaching
political agreement as to the fundamental values on which present-day
Croatia stands.
The appeal urges the government to set up a documentation centre about
the Homeland War, the science ministry to launch and finance a
national programme for researching the war and the creation of the
Croatian state, and the defence ministry to promote and protect the
dignity of the Croatian army.
Tudjman said the Hague tribunal's latest indictments against Bosnian
Croats were the final stage in an attempt to transform Croatia from
victim to aggressor. He called on all individuals and associations to
join the appeal.
Tomac said the latest indictments were formally identical to the one
the Hague tribunal issued against former Yugoslav President Slobodan
Milosevic. He added the indictments must be challenged now, in
Croatia, not just in The Hague.
Domazet accused the media of spreading wrong claims about the Homeland
War, and criticised the former government for failing to acknowledge
the importance of the assertion generals made in 2001 that a war more
dangerous than the 1991-5 one was being waged against Croatia.
Among the other signatories to the appeal are Drazen Budisa, Franjo
Greguric, Zlatko Matesa, Nikica Valentic and Bosiljko Misetic.
