THE HAGUE, April 2 (Hina) - The president of the war crimes tribunal in
The Hague, Theodor Meron, said after talks with Croatian Justice
Minister Vesna Skare-Ozbolt on Friday that cooperation with Croatia
was positive.#L#
The talks, addressing a variety of bilateral issues, were good and
constructive, Meron said, adding that in his opinion Croatia was
making good progress.
Skare-Ozbolt said she informed Meron of all the efforts Croatia was
investing in relations with the tribunal and the Office of the
Prosecutor, adding that she assessed the cooperation as positive.
The talks addressed Croatia's intention to be represented in
proceedings against generals Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac as well as
in those against the latest indictees, former Bosnian Croat military
and political leaders, so as to be able to refute the unacceptable
parts of the indictments. Prime Minister Ivo Sanader informed Meron of
Croatia's intention in a letter.
"Croatia firmly believes it will be legally represented in those
proceedings" as a friend of the court, Skare-Ozbolt said. She added
the friend of the court, the so-called amicus curiae, was a very
strong institute that was also discussed with Meron today.
The minister underlined Croatia would do everything necessary to
refute the legal and other elements of the indictments.
Sanader wrote to Meron after the indictment was issued against Cermak
and Markac, announcing Croatia's involvement in the trial in order to
refute the parts of the indictment alleging that Croatia's mid-1990s
leaders had formed a criminal enterprise aimed at ethnic cleansing.
