The local party branch celebrates March 18 also as the day when the
first Croatian and HDZ president, the late Franjo Tudjman, visited
Benkovac and a local Serb tried to assassinate him.
Party leader Ivo Sanader's envoy, Darko Milinovic, claiming that he
was speaking on Sanader's behalf, said that as long as the HDZ existed
nobody would reinterpret recent Croatian history and claim that
Tudjman had been at the helm of a criminal enterprise, as alleged in
the latest indictments from the Hague war crimes tribunal. Operation
Storm of 1995 was a glorious liberating operation, he added.
The head of the Benkovac HDZ town committee and mayor Branko Kutija
sent his regards to fugitive general Ante Gotovina, who is wanted by
the Hague tribunal, wherever he might be, which those present welcomed
with a round of applause.
