ZAGREB, March 18 (Hina) - The prospects of a court settlement being
reached on the damages the family of slain Milan Levar claims from the
state are good, the family's attorney, Branko Seric, said on
Thursday.#L#
He spoke to reporters after the first hearing at the Zagreb Municipal
Court. Levar's wife and son claim about 750,000 kuna from the state,
which they hold responsible for doing nothing to prevent Levar's
murder.
Seric confirmed that negotiations were under way for the state to pay
Vesna and Leon Levar 440,000 kuna for mental anguish caused by the
loss of husband and father and the fear they experienced, plus monthly
instalments of 2,500 kuna which the son claims for the loss of
upkeep.
The damages claim is based on the Law on Interior Affairs, i.e. the
plaintiff's allegation that nothing was done when the Hague tribunal
in April 1998 asked the Croatian Interior Ministry to protect Levar, a
potential witness in connection with war crimes committed in central
Croatia's Gospic in 1991, and his family.
