The indictment alleges that Stanko Vujanovic, in his capacity as
deputy commander of Vukovar's Territorial Defence, organised and
ordered the maltreatment and murder of at least 192 prisoners of war
and personally killed a dozen. He said today the there was no
Territorial Defence in eastern Croatia's Vukovar.
Vujanovic has requested to be given a court-appointed attorney, saying
he is poor and that his wife, Nada Kalaba, has been in custody since
26 December 2003 on suspicion that she took part in the Ovcara
massacre.
First on the indictment is the commander of Vukovar's Territorial
Defence, Miroljub Vujovic. Also charged are Jovica Peric, who refuted
the statement he made during investigation, when he admitted to the
crime, and Ivan Atanasijevic, previously known as Ivica Husnik, who
said he "sort of" understood what he was charged with.
The trial resumes on Thursday, when Predradg Madzarac and Milan
Vojnovic, also accused of murder and inhumane treatment of civilians
at Ovcara, will state their defence.
