ZAGREB, March 18 (Hina) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Wednesday condemned violent clashes between Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo, which is under UN administration, and requested the immediate cease of violence.

The UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) said violence erupted after a group
of 3,000 people in Kosovska Mitrovica attacked the police and the
UNMIK headquarters and, crossing the bridge which divides the town
into the Serb and Albanian sectors, attacked Serbs in the northern
part of the town.
Expressing full support to UN Civil Administrator in Kosovo Harry
Holkeri, Annan called on the local officials to help normalise the
situation and bring those responsible for violence to justice.
The United States also condemned the Serb-Albanian clashes which
claimed the lives of at least 17 people and called for peace.
The United States calls on the Kosovo citizens to re-establish peace
and lift road blockades, deputy spokesman for the US State Department
Adam Ereli said.
