MESIC: I COULD TESTIFY THAT MARKAC WAS ONLY IN CHARGE OF MUNICIPAL SERVICES IN KNIN

ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said that what he knows about the latest Hague indictments is based exclusively on information from the press and that if unofficial reports about General Ivan Cermak having been indicted prove true, he could testify that Cermak was in charge of re-establishing municipal services in Knin after Operation Storm and that he was not in command of any troops.
ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic has said that what he knows about the latest Hague indictments is based exclusively on information from the press and that if unofficial reports about General Ivan Cermak having been indicted prove true, he could testify that Cermak was in charge of re-establishing municipal services in Knin after Operation Storm and that he was not in command of any troops.#L# "I could testify about that because I visited Knin with a group of opposition representatives and talked to General Cermak several days after the liberation of Knin, " Mesic told reporters during a visit to a Zagreb primary school on Monday. Cermak was in charge of the functioning of municipal services and did not command any troops. Considering his duties in Knin, one can expect that he will not be punished, Mesic said when asked to comment on unofficial information about the government having received from the UN war crimes tribunal indictments against Cermak and Mladen Markac and an amended indictment against General Ante Gotovina. Mesic said he would meet Prime Minister Ivo Sanader during the day to discuss the reports. (Hina) rml
