MOSTAR, March 1 (Hina) - Western Herzegovina Canton, which covers the municipalities of Siroki Brijeg, Grude, Posusje and Ljubuski, is the only of the ten cantons in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina which did not mark Bosnia's
Independence Day on Monday.
MOSTAR, March 1 (Hina) - Western Herzegovina Canton, which covers the
municipalities of Siroki Brijeg, Grude, Posusje and Ljubuski, is the
only of the ten cantons in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina which
did not mark Bosnia's Independence Day on Monday.#L#
Cantonal officials said the canton had its own law on holidays which
did not include Bosnia's Independence Day. The officials said the
issue of holidays had not been solved on the state level.
Independence Day was also not marked in Republika Srpska. The Serb
member of Bosnia-Herzegovina's Presidency, Borislav Paravac, said the
Bosnian Serb people did not consider Independence Day their holiday
and it meant nothing to them.
At a referendum which was held on 1 March 1992 Bosnian Croats and
Muslims voted for Bosnia's independence, while the majority of Serbs
boycotted the referendum. Croats took part in the referendum after the
Catholic Church in Bosnia called on them to attend.
