Showing reporters a pile of membership cards of former members, Zagar
said he expected more people to leave the HNS Zagreb branch and that a
significant number of members may be also be expected to leave other
branches.
"A large number of members are unhappy with the lack of democracy
within the party, which resulted in the departure of 14 members from
the Zagreb branch last week," Zagar said.
Zagar said that the departures were triggered by a request by HNS
president Vesna Pusic that, on pain of suspension, he initiate
proceedings to expel Kresimir Franjic from the party following his
open letter in which he had criticised "two party tycoons", alluding
to former construction minister Radimir Cacic and HNS
secretary-general Srecko Ferencak, for participating in bids for the
construction of government-subsidised housing in Zagreb, which Franjic
said they should not have done for moral reasons.
Franjic, the former chairman of the HNS club of deputies in the Zagreb
City Assembly, reiterated on Wednesday that most of the people who had
left the party could not tolerate "the autocratic rule of party
president Vesna Pusic".
