ZAGREB, Feb 23 (Hina) - The Social Democratic Party (SDP) sent an open
letter to Science, Education and Sport Minister Dragan Primorac on
Monday following the showing of the film "Abortion" to third-grade
students at a Zagreb secondary school, saying that the film was
inappropriate.#L#
The Zagreb-based Jutarnji List daily said on Monday that the film,
which had been screened in a Religious Education class last Tuesday,
showed the course of an abortion in graphic detail.
"We wish to draw your attention to the need for educational
institutions to teach young generations in an appropriate manner,
without traumatising them," the SDP said.
The film was included in the curriculum for Religious Education
classes in secondary schools, which was approved by the Ministry of
Education and Sport and the Croatian Bishops' Conference.
The SDP said that "it is even more shocking that the children were
forced by the Religious Education teacher to watch a film they did not
want to".
The party said it supported education of students about all issues
relating to sex life, but appropriately to their age and general
moral principles. It pointed out that the Church did not have the
right to use Religious Education classes to educate children about sex
life "in an unobjective manner, stirring up extremely unpleasant
emotions and changing children's views".
The SDP requested an opinion from Minister Primorac on whether it was
appropriate to show such a film in Religious Education classes in
secondary schools.
