ZAGREB, Feb 21 (Hina) - The Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) has called on competent ministries and other state-run bodies to immediately tackle the problems of genetically modified organisms and food products that contain GMOs.#L# The HSS urges the Health Ministry and public health institutes, that are in charge of health and sanitation inspection, to check all food products on the market, especially those imported from other countries. HSS representatives, who held a news conference on Saturday, said they insisted on immediate and consistent enforcement of relevant laws, including the law on consumers' protection, the food law, and the environmental protection law in order that consumers could know what thy buy and what they eat. This opposition party calls on citizens to boycott food items which may contain GMOs. It also urges the Agriculture Ministry to establish a Food Agency. The HSS warned that despite the existing legislation in this field, some food products with GMOs appeared in shops in Croatia, although nobody previously asked to be allowed to sell such products. Besides, there was no clear information on labels on products that they contained GMOs. The HSS said it had been for years the proponent of promoting Croatian food production as GMO-free production and of proclaiming Croatia as a GMO-free country so that it could, together with Austria, Slovenia and Italy, make up a GMO-free zone of Alpe-Adria.
