PULA, Feb 16 (Hina) - The leadership of Istria County has cooperated
and will cooperate with all democratically elected governments of
Croatia and is therefore interested in an excellent cooperation with
the incumbent government, Istria County Prefect Ivan Jakovcic told a
news conference in Pula on Monday.#L#
What Premier (Ivo) Sanader has launched in the field of human and
minority rights has been already contained in the statute of our
county, Jakovic said adding that through its statute Istria County had
taken a stand against the then Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)
authorities' treatment of minority and human rights.
The prefect went on to say that he had an impression that the
incumbent HDZ government's support to Istrian projects were not "empty
promises".
Jakovcic informed reporters of his recent visit to Brussels where he
presented a programme on local authorities in the Office of the
Italian region of Tuscany. The project, entitled 'Local Authorities as
Generators of Development', envisages new possibilities for the
development of local authorities in the Balkans and covers Istria
County, the municipality of Brtonigla, and the cities of Pazin, Rovinj
and Varazdin.
Jakovcic expects the Italian Foreign Ministry and the region of
Tuscany to financially assist the project, worth four million euros.
He announced the opening of the Office of Istria County in Brussels by
the end of this year, but added that the political dimensions of the
decision should yet be considered, after which the office would be set
up independently or in cooperation with regions that already had their
offices in Brussels.
