OSCE: LAW ON HRT DOESN'T EXCLUDE POSSIBILITY OF INTERFERENCE OF POLITICS IN HRT'S WORK

ZAGREB, Feb 8 (Hina) - The existing Law on Croatian Radio -Television (HRT) does not exclude the possibility of interference of politics into the HRT's work, a spokesman for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Croatia said on Sunday.#L# Although in many aspects the law is in line with recommendations by European experts, its initial implementation, particularly the lengthy process of nomination and appointment of the HRT Council by the parliament, points to some flaws, spokesman Alessandro Fracasseti said in a statement. The OSCE issued the statement in response to a recent statement by Social Democratic Party vice-president Zeljka Antunovic, who said the Law on the HRT was in line with recommendations by the OSCE and the Council of Europe. The opinion of experts on the draft law includes recommendations on a more active role of civil society in the process of appointment of Council members, Fracasseti recalled. The OSCE Mission wishes to stress that its opinion on the Law on the HRT does not refer to the HRT's current news programme, where no signs of political bias were identified, the statement reads.
