Under discussion was the progress of implementing the main political
criteria set by the European Union, including cooperation with the UN
war crimes tribunal in The Hague, the return of refugees, the
protection of minorities, judicial reform, relations with neighbouring
countries and regional cooperation.
"The High Representative very positively assessed the first steps and
activities of the new Croatian government, stressing the importance of
continuity and further steps in the process of reform that has been
initiated in Croatia," the statement said.
Zuzul asked Solana for support in the EU Council of Ministers in the
process of deciding on Croatia's application for EU membership, the
statement said, adding that Solana had accepted the invitation to
visit Croatia soon.
Croatian Radio quoted Solana as saying that the Croatian government
was doing its best in cooperation with the Hague tribunal, and
expressing hope that Croatia's efforts in cooperation with the
tribunal would be fruitful.
Croatia will continue doing its part of the job on the road to EU and
NATO membership, and one should not bother too much about the date of
admission, Zuzul told the radio.
