ZAGREB, Jan 23(Hina) - The foreign currencies reserves of the Croatian
National Bank (HNB) amounted to US8.19 billion, rising by 39.1
percent or 2.3 billion, since the end of 2002, the central bank said
in its bulletin issued this January.#L#
With the further depreciation of the dollar in relation to the euro,
the value of the HNB's foreign currencies reserves increased by 469
million in December.
December's rise in the central bank's foreign currencies reserves was
the result of the purchase of foreign currencies from commercial banks
as well as from the state and the intensified issuance of the HNB
treasury bonds in foreign currencies.
The net available reserves at the end of 2003 totalled 5.68 billion,
climbing by 21.8 percent (or by one billion US dollars) as against the
end of 2002.
The foreign reserves are an important indicator of a country's
liquidity.
