ZAGREB, Jan 7 (Hina) - The Association of Workers' Trade Unions of
Croatia (URSH) voiced regret on Wednesday that the Croatian Democratic
Union-led government had postponed for one year the reduction of VAT,
which it said had been its key promise before recent parliamentary
elections.#L#
The postponement raises doubt as to the fulfilment of other
pre-election promises about more social and existential rights for
workers and citizens, which made the party appear more socially
sensitive than certain social democratic parties, the URSH said in a
statement.
The URSH advocates introducing a five percent VAT rate for basic food
products and children's clothes and footwear, as some neighbouring and
many transition countries it says have done.
The statement applauds the government's call on traders to be more
socially sensitive, reduce margins, restore the former price for
bread, as well as the decision on lifting the compulsory work order
for doctors, saying this made up for the mistake and arrogance of the
former authorities.
