ZAGREB, Dec 20 (Hina) - Around 500 members of civil servants' unions on Tuesday staged a rally in Zagreb's Ban Jelacic Square demanding higher salaries and a better status for the country's 65,000 civil servants.

The protest was organised by four civil servants' unions under the motto "Protecting the Dignity of Civil Servants".

Union representatives said that employees in the state administration, army, police, customs services and the judiciary would stage a day-long strike on December 28 if the government failed to meet their demands.

On the day of the strike, civil servants working at courts, ministries and other state administration bodies will stop working from 8 am to 4 pm, while police and customs services will slow down their work.

The government has offered the unions a three-percent rise in the base salary, which the unions rejected, demanding a permanent monthly bonus of 300 kuna to temporarily remove the existing discrepancy between their salaries and those of other budgetary users.

After the protest, which lasted less than an hour, a union delegation presented government officials with a notification about the strike.
