ZAGREB, Dec 14 (Hina) - A total of 342 new pig farms should be build across Croatia in the next five years, the Government said on Wednesday, adopting a programme on the development of hog-breeding production.

Under the programme, Croatia should be able to satisfy the needs of the internal market without relying on imports.

The domestic production currently covers about 80 percent of the needs, while 20 percent of pork is imported.

The Agriculture Ministry estimates that the implementation of the programme would require some 2.2 billion kuna, of which 1.7 billion would come from bank loans.

There are 215,000 pig farms in Croatia at present, however, more than 80 percent of the farms has maximum ten pigs. Only 1.5 percent of the farms has more than 50 pigs.
