THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Dec 8 (Hina) - The Hague war crimes tribunal expects General Ante Gotovina to be transferred to The Hague relatively soon, ICTY spokesman Jim Landale said on Thursday.

This morning Spanish authorities informed the ICTY that General Gotovina had been arrested last night on the Canary Islands. The tribunal expects Gotovina to be transferred into the tribunal's custody as soon as the necessary preparations are completed, Landale told Hina by telephone.

Asked when the arrested general could be transferred to The Hague, Landale said he expected this to happen relatively soon.

Asked whether Gotovina could be transferred later today or tomorrow, Landale said he did not have such information.

Gotovina had been on the run since June 2001, when he was indicted by the Hague tribunal. An amended indictment from 2004 charges him according to personal and command responsibility with seven counts of crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war committed against Serb civilians and their property in the Knin area during and after the 1995 Operation Storm.
