"If the general has been arrested, we will take all the necessary legal steps at our disposal to help our client," lawyer Marin Ivanovic said.
The news of Gotovina's arrest was broken by Hague tribunal chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte during her visit to Belgrade on Thursday.
Lawyer Marijan Pedisic said he believed the report of Gotovina's arrest was true given that it came from the chief prosecutor.
"If that is true, further procedure is very simple. Since the general was arrested abroad, he will soon be handed over to the Hague tribunal, because the indictment against him has been confirmed, and there are no procedural possibilities for his handover to be postponed, as would be possible before the Croatian judiciary," Pedisic said.
Gotovina's American lawyer Luka Misetic, who is likely to take over his client's defence before the Hague tribunal, was unavailable for comment.
Gotovina has been in hiding since June 2001 when he was indicted for war crimes committed during and after the Croatian military operation "Storm" that crushed the Serb rebellion in central Croatia in August 1995.
