THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Dec 7 (Hina) - The trial of former Croatian Serb rebel leader Milan Martic is scheduled to start before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague on Tuesday, 13 December, ICTY spokesman Jim Landale announced in a telephone interview with Hina on Wednesday.

Martic, former minister of the interior and defence in the rebel Serb government based in Knin and president of the self-styled Serb statelet within Croatia in 1994/95, is charged with 19 counts of crimes against humanity and violations of the laws and customs of war that were committed against Croatian and other non-Serb civilians in the Serb-occupied areas of Croatia from 1991 to 1995 and in western Bosnia in 1994. The charges also include two missile attacks on Zagreb in May 1995.

He has been in ICTY custody since 15 May 2002.
