VIENNA, Dec 5 (Hina) - The leader of the Austrian association of Danubian Germans (DAG), Rudolf Reimann, has expressed indignation at statements made by Croatian President Stjepan Mesic regarding an initialled agreement on compensation to be paid to Germans who left Croatia in the wake of the Second World War.

"Croatia will lose much of its positive image in Europe," Reimann was quoted by the Austrian news agency APA as saying on Monday in a comment on Mesic's response to plans by the current Croatian and Austrian governments to conclude an agreement on compensation to be given to Austrian citizens who fled Croatia after WW II, leaving their property behind.

The DAG leader issued a statement saying that Mesic's arguments against the restitution of property which Danubian Germans left when they fled Croatia could not be accepted because the (previous) agreement on damages concluded after WWII was signed by the former Yugoslavia and not Croatia. In addition, that agreement did not refer to Austrian nationals, Reimann said.

Reimann also claims that the previous agreement was not in line with conclusions of the Potsdam conference of the victorious Allies.

Mesic recently delivered a televised address to the nation expressing his disapproval of the Ivo Sanader cabinet's plans to conclude a compensation agreement with Austria.
