VALBANDON, Nov 4 (Hina) - Croatia's Minister of the Interior, Ivica Kirin, said on Friday that the police force would open more to the public and change its relationship to the media because it was an institution that was obliged to provide citizens with information.

Kirin was speaking at a round table discussion on police and the media, held in Valbandon near Pula on Friday. The event was attended by the minister's assistants, heads of police departments and the Police Directorate, and reporters.

Noting that he was dissatisfied with the ministry's relationship to the media when he took up office, Kirin pledged to improve relations with the public.

The ministry therefore plans to launch, in a few months, an Internet portal, and appoint a spokesperson for the Police Directorate and spokespersons for all police stations.

Reporters warned police officials about problems in communication with the police, stating that they were not always able to obtain timely and reliable information as well as that police refused to disclose complete information about perpetrators of criminal acts.

The minister said that the police had to take care when issuing information so as not to jeopardise the rights of individuals.

The minister briefly acquainted reporters with changes to the laws on police, arms, minimum security measures in financial institutions and on the prevention of riots at sporting events. He said that changes to the law on police envisaged more extensive police powers and obligations and that police officers would undergo obligatory training before the entry into force of the new law.
