PODGORICA, Nov 1 (Hina) - If the parliament of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro (SCG) does not adopt an agreement with NATO, Montenegro's Social Democrats (SDP) will initiate that Montenegro sign an agreement with the alliance.

An announcement to that effect was made on Tuesday by Borislav Banovic, an official of the SDP, which forms the ruling coalition in Montenegro with the Democratic Party of Socialists.

He said there were political reasons for the SCG parliament to adopt the agreement envisaging the transport of NATO troops across the state union.

Banovic said that if the SCG parliament rejected the agreement, Montenegro could sign an agreement with NATO which would not refer to defence, but issues of transport and communications, among others.

He said there existed justified reasons to adopt the agreement because of still potentially unstable areas in the region.

The SCG parliament is expected this week to debate if the state union should sign the agreement which would allow NATO air forces to fly across SCG territory.
