Stankovic was backed by the ruling coalition in Serbia, the ruling Democratic Socialist Party of Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and the opposition Socialist People's Party, the People's Party and the Democratic Serbian Party.
Opposed were deputies of the Social Democratic Party and the Serbian People's Party from Montenegro, and the Serbian Radical Party of Vojislav Seselj, the Social Democratic Party of Nebojsa Covic and the Democratic Party of President Boris Tadic from Serbia.
