Rail operator's director testifies how his predecessors syphoned money

ZAGREB, March 21 (Hina) - Croatian Railways (HZ) management board president Zlatko Rogozar testified on Monday about irregularities in the company's business operations which he discovered when he succeeded Biserka Robic at the helm of the HZ's daughter company Agit in May 2008.

Rogozar told the Zagreb County Court that Robic and Davorin Kobak, a former HZ management board president and one of the four defendants in the trial for the embezzlement of EUR 3.7 million from the national rail operator, had been operating with off-shore companies.

The witness said that analyses of costs in the invoices sent by off-shore companies showed that those costs might not have been real. Additional inquires confirmed those suspicions, according to him.

Rogozar then informed the HZ Cargo CEO of irregularities in Agit's operations, and the HZ Cargo director informed Transport Minister Bozidar Kalmeta, who advised Rogozar and Zoran Popovac to notify the state anti-corruption investigating agency (USKOK) about the case.

USKOK later charged Kobak, Robic and Robic's associate Andrija Saric with transferring EUR 3.7 million via fictitious bills to four off-shore companies in Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and with retaining EUR 3.2 million from 2003 to 2008.

Kobak, and Robic and the fourth defendant in this case, Vladimir Vasiljevic, a former director of the Serbian national rail operator, pleaded not guilty, while Saric pleaded guilty.
