ZAGREB, Oct 26 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Wednesday
issued a statement on the outcome of the October 16 referendum on Iraq's new
constitution, saying that the referendum was a crucial event for the
strengthening of democratic authority and efforts to secure peace, democracy
and stability in the country and region. The Iraqi election
commission on Tuesday released a report saying that the turnout at the
referendum was 63 percent. Seventy-eight percent of voters supported the new
constitution and 21 percent were against. In only two of the country's 18
provinces more than two-thirds of the electorate were against the
constitution.
Croatia supports the people of Iraq in its efforts to build a secure
and prosperous society and is ready to discuss with the Iraqi authorities all
issues of mutual interest, particularly through a special mission to be opened
in Bagdad soon, the government said in the statement.
