CAVTAT, Oct 24 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Monday that the Croatian economy would certainly suffer damage from avian influenza, announcing the possibility of intervention buying of poultry intended for export.

Sanader said that already next week owners would be compensated for the poultry that had been killed as part of the government's efforts to contain the spread of bird flu. He also said that poultry meat was not dangerous for humans and that there was no risk of humans being infected.

The prime minister was speaking to reporters in the southern coastal town of Cavtat where he was attending an international conference on foreign investment.

Meanwhile, the Croatian Chamber of the Economy (HGK) issued a statement saying "there has been no substantial change in poultry meat sales nor has there been a substantial increase in the sale of other meat."

The statement said that the HGK was in constant contact with Croatian poultry meat producers and major store chains after an H5 avian influenza virus was identified in the country last week.
