ZAGREB, Oct 23 (Hina) - After a bird flu virus was detected in Croatia, Montenegro's authorities are taking protection measures, the director of the Montenegrin Veterinary Administration, Ivan Popovic, said on Sunday.

"The import and transportation of goods by which the bird flu virus could be brought from Croatia has been banned. The Debeli Brijeg border crossing with Croatia has been disinfected and other measures have been taken," Popovic told the Montenegrin media.

Veterinary officials continued the culling of poultry in the villages of Grudnjak, Kutova, Zokov Gaj, Boksic, Boksic Lug, Staro Petrovo Polje, Novo Petrovo Polje, Gutmanovci, Veliki Rastovac and Mali Rastovac in the municipalities of Zdenci and Djurdjenovac in the east.

Ten thousand fowl are expected to be culled in 1,000 private farms.

At today's extraordinary session, the leaders of Bjelovar-Bilogora County and Istria County set up commissions for monitoring and implementing measures in case bird flu appears in the two counties.

The Croatian Chamber of the Economy said in a statement today that the process of poultry breeding at farms in Croatia was entirely controlled.

"The Croatian Chamber of the Economy is in permanent contact with competent state institutions and poultry producers. At this moment it is important that consumers follow the instructions of expert bodies," the head of the sector for agriculture, forestry and food-processing industry, Bozica Markovic,
