ZAGREB, Oct 20 (Hina) - Health ministers from EU member and candidate states have concluded that chances for the outbreak of bird flu in Europe were very small, but they still exist, Croatian Health Minister Neven Ljubicic, who is taking part in a two-day conference in Great Britain, said on Thursday.

At the conference on bird flu in Hertfordshire, the ministers said that all necessary measures must be taken so as to prevent a possible epidemic. They added that each country must draw up a national protection strategy according to the recommendations of the World Health Organisation.

The countries will regularly report to the European centre for the control and prevention of diseases in Brussels which will coordinate activities and take all necessary measures to prevent avian flu from spreading.

The EU will set up a fund for helping poor countries purchase anti-virus medications, it was decided at the conference. This fund will particularly be earmarked for non-European countries because of the migration of their population to wealthier countries, Ljubicic told Hina over the phone.

He informed the present of measures Croatia was taking to prevent the spreading of bird flu.
