BRUSSELS, Sept 29 (Hina) - EU ambassadors on Thursday failed to
reach agreement on a negotiating framework for Turkey with which the EU is
expected to start membership talks on Monday, and the EU chair Great Britain
called a special meeting of the Council of Ministers for Monday, diplomatic
sources in Brussels said. A member of the British EU Presidency said
an agreement at the level of ambassadors was not possible today, but that
efforts to reach it would continue at the level of ministers, who he said would
have to meet on Sunday evening.
Austria's position blocked an agreement between the 25 EU members
because Vienna still advocates privileged partnership as an alternative to the
full EU membership of Turkey.
